Nikah - Islamic Marriage

Marriage is a blessed institution in Islam and an important part of building strong Muslim families and communities.

The Islamic Foundation of Drogheda (IFD) can facilitate Islamic marriage ceremonies (Nikah) for couples wishing to marry according to Islamic teachings.

Arranging a Nikah

If you would like to have your Nikah conducted through IFD, please contact the Imam in advance.

The Imam will discuss the proposed marriage with you, explain the Islamic requirements and confirm the arrangements for the ceremony.

Each Nikah request is considered individually, taking into account the circumstances of the couple and the Islamic requirements of marriage.

Please do not confirm a date or make arrangements on the understanding that the Nikah will take place until this has been agreed with the Imam.

Islamic Requirements

A valid Islamic marriage has certain requirements which must be fulfilled.

The Imam will discuss these with the couple before the Nikah. Depending on the circumstances, these will normally include:

The free and clear consent of both the bride and groom
The Wali (guardian) of the bride, where applicable
An agreed Mahr (marriage gift) for the bride
The required witnesses
Offer and acceptance of the marriage
Confirmation that there is no Islamic impediment to the marriage

The Imam may request additional information where necessary before agreeing to conduct the Nikah.

The Mahr

The Mahr is a marriage gift given by the groom to the bride and is her exclusive right.

The amount or form of the Mahr should be agreed between the couple before the Nikah takes place.

The Mahr may be money, gold or another agreed item or benefit that is permissible in Islam. It should be reasonable and mutually agreed upon.

The agreed Mahr will normally be recorded as part of the Nikah documentation.

Wali and Witnesses

The Imam will discuss the requirements concerning the bride's Wali and the witnesses with the couple when arranging the Nikah.

If there are particular circumstances concerning the Wali, witnesses or family situation, please inform the Imam beforehand so that the matter can be considered appropriately.

Nikah Certificate

Following the ceremony, IFD can provide the couple with a Nikah Certificate confirming that the Islamic marriage ceremony took place.

The certificate can record details including the bride and groom, date of Nikah, agreed Mahr, witnesses and the person conducting the ceremony.

Important: Islamic and Civil Marriage

A Nikah conducted through the Islamic Foundation of Drogheda is an Islamic religious marriage ceremony.

An IFD Nikah Certificate records the Islamic ceremony and is not a civil marriage certificate.

Couples are responsible for understanding and fulfilling any separate civil registration or legal requirements that apply to them under Irish law.

Where the Imam has concerns regarding the circumstances of a proposed marriage, additional information may be requested before the Nikah proceeds.

Previous Marriages

If either person has previously been married, please inform the Imam when making your enquiry.

The Imam may need to establish that any previous marriage has ended appropriately before a new Nikah can take place and may request relevant information or documentation.

Confidentiality and Safeguarding

Marriage must be entered into freely.

IFD will not knowingly facilitate a forced marriage or a marriage where the necessary Islamic requirements have not been fulfilled.

If concerns arise regarding consent, safeguarding, identity or the circumstances surrounding a proposed marriage, the Imam may postpone or decline to conduct the Nikah or request that certain matters are clarified first.

Fees and Contributions

Any applicable fee or suggested contribution for the Nikah ceremony will be communicated before the booking is confirmed.
