The death of a loved one is one of the most difficult moments a family can experience. The Islamic Foundation of Drogheda (IFD) is available to support members of our community with Islamic guidance, local assistance and help with the necessary funeral and burial arrangements.

For Muslim funeral and burial arrangements, IFD works in coordination with the Islamic Foundation of Ireland (IFI), which facilitates Muslim burial services in Ireland.

When a Death Occurs

IFI can assist with the necessary Muslim funeral and burial arrangements, while IFD can support the family locally and help with Islamic guidance and coordination where required.

The Islamic Funeral Process

The Islamic funeral process generally includes:

Ghusl – ritual washing and preparation of the deceased
Kafan – shrouding of the deceased
Salat al-Janazah – the Islamic funeral prayer
Funeral and transportation arrangements
Muslim burial
Dua and support for the bereaved family

The exact arrangements will depend on the circumstances of the death and may involve IFI, IFD, hospitals, funeral directors, cemeteries and the relevant authorities.

Ghusl & Kafan

Before burial, the deceased Muslim is normally washed according to the Islamic requirements of Ghusl and wrapped in the burial shroud known as the Kafan.

These are important acts through which the deceased is treated with dignity, care and respect.

IFI can assist families with coordinating the appropriate funeral and burial arrangements.

Salat al-Janazah

Salat al-Janazah is the congregational funeral prayer offered for a deceased Muslim.

IFD can assist locally with guidance concerning the Janazah prayer and, where appropriate, its coordination with the Imam and community.

Members of the Muslim community are encouraged to attend the Janazah, make dua for the deceased and support the bereaved family.

Muslim Burial in Ireland

Islam encourages burial to take place without unnecessary delay.

At the same time, the necessary medical, administrative and legal procedures in Ireland must be respected.

The Islamic Foundation of Ireland coordinates and facilitates Muslim funeral and burial arrangements, helping families navigate the practical requirements involved.

If the Death Occurs in Hospital

If your loved one passes away in a hospital, hospice or care facility:

Inform the staff that the deceased is Muslim.
Explain that the family wishes the funeral and burial to take place according to Islamic practice.
Follow the hospital's immediate medical and administrative procedures.
Contact Br. Fazel at IFI regarding the Muslim funeral and burial arrangements.
Contact the IFD Imam if you require local Islamic or pastoral support.

If the Death Occurs at Home

If someone dies at home, the appropriate medical and legal procedures must first be followed.

Depending on the circumstances, this may involve contacting the person's doctor, emergency services or An Garda Síochána.

If the death is unexpected or unexplained, the death may need to be referred to the Coroner.

Once the appropriate authorities have been contacted, contact IFI so that the Muslim funeral and burial arrangements can be coordinated.

Coroner & Post-Mortem

In certain circumstances, Irish law requires a death to be reported to a Coroner.

This can affect when the deceased can be released for burial.

Families should cooperate fully with the Coroner, Gardaí, medical professionals and other relevant authorities.

Those coordinating the Muslim funeral may, where appropriate, explain the religious importance of burial taking place without unnecessary delay while respecting the necessary legal procedures.
